Y interdiscinplinary studies.
tomorrow is my IS enrolment day, and i still don't know what IS to take. i'll be taking world issues : a singapore prospects and is required to choose one more. any suggestions?
Business Communication
This module aims to develop students' verbal and written communication skills in a corporate context to help them prepare for the working world. The module compares and contrasts corporate and student cultures, and introduces some of the basic norms of communication at work. Students will learn how to engage in business correspondences, write brief proposals and conduct meetings (including minute-writing). As part of the module requirement, they will complete a programme on Job Preparation, specifically in the areas of job-skills analysis, application techniques, image-dressing, grooming and interviewee manners.
Customer Service Communication
The module encourages students to develop a customer-oriented mindset, sensitising them to the rising expectations of customers in an increasingly competitive marketplace. Students will develop effective communication and problem-solving skills in identifying customer needs, closing deals, maintaining and managing customer relationships. As part of the module requirement, graduating students will complete a programme on Job Preparation, specifically in the areas of job-skills analysis, application techniques, image-dressing, grooming and interviewee manners.
Designing Promotional Materials
This module introduces students to visual communication. Students will acquire a basic understanding of key concepts and processes in visual design work and in writing good copy for promotional purposes. Based on a given brief, they will develop a set of promotional materials and make a short presentation of their work. As part of the module requirement, students will complete a programme on Job Preparation, specifically in the areas of job-skills analysis, application techniques, image-dressing, grooming and interviewee manners.
Events Communication
This module teaches students how to communicate via a proposed events management plan with a working timeline. Students will plan for an event and write a proposal. They will also practise pitching and negotiating skills. As part of the module requirement, students will complete a programme on Job Preparation, specifically in the areas of job-skills analysis, application techniques, image-dressing, grooming and interviewee manners.
Human Communication
This module gives students an overview of the fundamentals of human communication. The study focuses on the various areas of human communication - intrapersonal, interpersonal, group, family, organisational, and intercultural. Students will gain a better understanding of the processes that constitute their interactions in different communication contexts.
Online Communications Campaigns
This module equips students with a working knowledge of Web-based communication interfaces. Students will develop an integrated online communications campaign for various purposes and audiences. In addition, they will write and design online surveys, opinion polls, discussion forums and bulletin boards as online communication tools. As part of the module requirement, students will complete a programme on Job Preparation, specifically in the areas of job-skills analysis, application techniques, image-dressing, grooming and interviewee manners.
Corporate Communication
This module provides students with the skills for communicating corporate image. Through an understanding of corporate strategies, such as community outreach, community relations and corporate philanthropy activities, students will learn how to organise and manage publicity events, including handling a corporate crisis. Students will be exposed to the various communication channels, such as press kits and media conferences, and learn to choose strategies that best fits the target audience. As part of the module requirement, students will complete a programme on Job Preparation, specifically in the areas of job-skills analysis, application techniques, image-dressing, grooming and interviewee manners.
Technical Writing
This module is meant to complement the technical training students receive, equipping them with technical-writing skills to meet the demand of their future jobs. As part of the module requirement, students will complete a programme on Job Preparation, specifically in the areas of job-skills analysis, application techniques, image-dressing, grooming and interviewee manners.
Effective Negotiation
This module introduces the fundamental processes of negotiation, the strategies to manage change and the important role which ethical principles play in decision-making. Through experiential and interactive activities, students will learn to develop effective communication and problem-solving skills and improve their ability to analyse, plan and implement successful negotiations.
Effective People Management
This module provides a fundamental understanding of essential people skills in an organisational context to prepare students for their future role as executives/managers in their respective disciplines. The content focuses on creating positive relationships, handling conflicts, coaching and mentoring in the four key managerial functions of planning, organising, leading and controlling in the context of ethical decision-making.
Ethical Dilemmas
This module discusses ethical dilemmas in high-profile corporations. Issues like whether the Challenger spaceship disaster could have been avoided, or whether a country should burn its rainforests for economic development, are discussed. This course will combine business history and theory, and will challenge students to form and express their own ethical standards.
Living in the Information Era
This module looks at various issues pertaining to intellectual property, copyright, privacy, ethics, and security, as knowledge and creativity becoming increasingly important assets for the individual and enterprises in this new digital era. This awareness will help students cope well in the information age.
Mind Quest for Excellence
This module explores tools and skills to help students achieve a deeper understanding of how their “neuro” (mind) functions and how daily language (linguistics) influences their behaviour. The use of certain tools can help students install a new “bio-program” that enhances their daily performance and align their beliefs and values to behaviour.
Fast Startup through Franchising
This module is designed to help students develop a clear picture of franchising and franchisors. Students will learn about the nature of franchising, the characteristics of the franchiser and franchisee, evaluating franchising opportunities, legal concerns, and the development of appropriate franchising strategies.
Insight into the Tourism Industry
This module introduces students to the tourism industry and the various segments within. Students will acquire some understanding of the growth and impact of tourism, different modes of travel, management of events and conventions as well as the roles of various tourism organizations. Students will also have an overview of tourism trends, strategies and product development in Singapore through case studies and projects.
Investing in the Stock Market
This module provides an understanding of the history, participants and workings of the stock market. Students will be taught the use and interpretation of financial information from various sources for informed decision-making in investments. The fundamentals of the stock market, the various instruments traded, the rudiments of trading and settlement procedures, and the risks involved will be covered.
Appreciating Artwork
This module aims to give students an overall appreciation of various art forms. Students will interpret paintings from around the world as well as learn about major periods in the history of art in Western and Eastern civilisations.
Understanding the Media
This module aims to provide students will an appreciation of the various forms of media, e.g. radio, television, film, the Internet, and their broad functions. Students will also examine the impact of the media on its audience.
The World of Aerospace
The module highlights the development of the aerospace industry in Singapore and its future prospects and challenges. Students will gain a broad perspective of the fundamental applications of aerospace technology with emphasis on the local aerospace industry and the related socio-economic issues.
Home Electricity
This module aims to provide students with a basic understanding of how electricity is distributed in a house, how it can be handled safely and how to conserve energy. Lessons are complemented with hands-on sessions where students will acquire the skills to perform basic trouble-shooting on simple home lighting and power circuits.
Mobile Robotics
This module covers the fundamental concepts, hardware elements and software control of an autonomous mobile robot. It also focuses on the construction of a simple navigating robot and its basic movement control. Students will use Lego construction bricks for fast prototyping with programs written in ‘MindStorm‘. A robot competition will be held for all students at the end of the module.
